Charleston Diaries: $5 Eats

Charleston is known for award winning menus including both James Beard and Michelin Star restaurants that highlight all the richness and culture that the south has to offer.

As much as I love fine dining I am a bigger fan of cheap eats! It's fun to be able to explore a town pop in and spend only a few bucks trying this food and then go to another spot spending few bucks etc... This also allow availably for a higher margin of individuals to be able to try delicious foods instead of just an elite class.

So I had to kick it off this list with a Southern staple, Biscuits.

1. Callie's Hot Little Biscuit

Callie's is a hole-in-the-wall joint that you may just breeze by except you wont be able to miss the long line out the door, and I mean long! Callie's is known for their made from scratch biscuits. Nothing says the south like a well-made buttered biscuit!

Callie is changing up the biscuit game by making something that is so traditional and adding funk and flare. The biscuits are baked fresh daily and you can buy them the traditional way, topped with a dollop of butter or you can try one of their crazy but delicious flavors such as Lemon Poppy Seed or Patty Cake.

I suggest ordering what I termed a biscuit flight, 3 biscuits of the flavor of your choosing for only $5.

2. Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream

Directly across the street from Callie's is Jeni's, how perfect is that! This is not your average ice cream parlor. Jeni's is known for it's unique flavors that you will never find anywhere else! After this trip, I noticed Jeni's is now being sold at certain grocery stores like Whole Foods and The Fresh Market. As good as they are prepacked, its nothing like getting it freshly scooped.

Pro Tip: Try before you buy! Jeni's allows you to sample as many flavors of ice cream as your heart desires and if you are like me and you still cant decide after trying everything, ask them to split your scoop.

Splitting the scoop allows you to choose 2 different flavors on one cone or in one cup for the price of 1 scoop. My recommendation is to get Wildberry Lavender & Honey Vanilla Bean.

3. Sugar Bake Shop

Sugar Bake Shop has taken all of Charleston's charm into one bakery and added a bow, its just that cute!

I will be honest parking is horrendous near this bakery. So if you are staying downtown and can walk to Sugar Bake Shop that would be ideal.

I recommend ordering the Sugar-Coated Blueberry Cupcake, it's to die for!
