Coffee Conversations: Sahara

Kicking off my new series entitled, Coffee Conversations is a sustainable blogger that I personally look to for inspiration. Her Instagram feed & Blog is filled with beautifully curated photos and her plant based recipes are top-notch.

So grab a cup of coffee and take minute to enjoy my interview with Sahara.

Q: Sahara, please tell us about yourself?

A:  I live in Prince Edward Island, Canada and I run a blog and Instagram called “Sahara’s Balanced Life.” When I’m not in the kitchen coming up with new recipes, you can find me hanging out with my fiancé, doing yoga, going for nature walks, reading, and playing board games!

Q: What is it like to live in Prince Edward Island?

A: It’s beautiful! There are so many beaches, trails, and quaint villages to explore; We enjoy a very slow and relaxed pace of life here.  And I’m a huge fan of Anne of Green Gables, so I love all the tourist shops and museums too.

Q: What inspired you to create Sahara's balanced life?

A: I was finishing up my degree in Foods and Nutrition and I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with it, so I started a blog to share my recipes! I had been passionate about nutrition, mental wellbeing, and the environment for years and I wanted to create a positive space to share what I had learned and help others form healthy and sustainable habits. It also turned out to be the creative outlet I needed in my life!

Q: How would you describe your blog to new readers?

A: On my blog I share plant-based recipes (all vegan and many gluten-free) as well as advice to inspire wellness and environmental sustainability. I always focus on balance and flexibility over perfection. After years of trying to follow strict diets, I’ve found that listening to my body works best and I apply that philosophy to food, fitness, and self-care.

Q: What type of camera do you use?

A: I use the Canon EOS M100.

Q: What are your top 3 tips to living more sustainable?

A:

  1. Start with small changes to create less waste like switching to a bamboo toothbrush or reusable straws. Little changes add up to make a big difference!
  2. Become a more mindful shopper and say no to things you don’t need that will become waste.
  3. Shop locally as much as possible to save on packaging and transportation, as well as to support small businesses.

Q: What is your favorite recipe that you have on your blog?

A: Definitely my Chickpea Pot Pie with a biscuit top. It’s so cozy and comforting.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant? And your favorite dish to order?

A:  My favourite restaurant is Splendid Essence in Charlottetown, PEI. They serve authentic Chinese food and it’s all vegetarian! I always order sweet and sour soy nuggets with a side of steamed dumplings.

Q: If you could have 3 people from anywhere or any time period over for dinner who would they be?

A: I can honestly only think of two and that’s my great grandmother and LM Montgomery (the author of Anne of Green Gables) because I think the three of us would be kindred spirits.

Q: What is your favorite plant based milk?

A: Oat milk! Because it’s so creamy and has a nice neutral flavour that works well in both sweet and savory dishes.

Two Bonus Questions:

Q: What was the last good book that you read?

A: I recently finished reading “To Hell With The Hustle” by Jefferson Bethke. It’s all about living more mindfully and rejecting the busy, noisy hustle culture. It was so dense with information, I think I need to read it again.

Q: What is 1 piece of clothing you own that you can not live with out?

A: Comfy pants! After a long day, I love nothing more than changing into loungewear and sweatpants are a must-have for me.
